{I wrote this play for Creative Writing class recently. I thought it would be nice to get some opiunions on it before I turn it in. It's approximately ten minutes long, and I think it has great dialouge. Enjoy!}
Scene One- Spades
[DAVID appears on stage, chained to the stiff chair upon which he rests. Beyond the door, unbeknownst to him, IVIN is just beyond the door, talking on the phone.]
IVIN
[hushed, on phone]
... yes, sir, I know, but it can't be helped-
[AGENT enters]
Ah, there you are. You're here to relieve me, correct?
AGENT
Affirmative.
IVIN
Very well, then. I'll have a word with our guest.
[IVIN opens the door and enters the prison cell.]
DAVID
W... water...
IVIN
You'll be given proper care once you confess to your crime.
DAVID
...what crime... ?
IVIN
This will be a lot easier on both of us if you start talking.
DAVID
You want me to talk? Fine... I was born... on February 18th, 1983... to two loving parents...
IVIN
[pounds fist against all, raises voice]
I won't tolerate belligerance, Mr. Consalves, nor will I accept lies.
DAVID
Please... I don't even know who you are...
IVIN
And it's best it remains that way, Mr. Consalves. All you need to be aware of is that I'm duly authorized by the president of the United States to hold you here for as long as you refuse to speak.
DAVID
About what? I did nothing!
IVIN
Isn't it true that you met a man by the name of Hadam al'Qain for dinner at the Cheau d'If this past weekend?
DAVID
[Confused]
Huh- no! It's not!
IVIN
So, I'm to assume you just happened to eat there at the same time then.
DAVID
Yes- if I was even there at any time!
IVIN
We don't make mistakes, Mr. Consalves.
[holds up cellular phone]
We found this at the restaurant.
DAVID
My phone! It's been missing since last week!
IVIN
And I surmise your body was stolen as well?
DAVID
[resigned]
Probably...
IVIN
Now, this phone shows that you've been in touch with Mr. al'Qain several times over the past few months. Did you not just say you'd lost your phone a week ago?
DAVID
I did, but- it must be some kind of set up! Maybe my phone records were tampered with, or-
IVIN
-or you're lying, you miserable American traitor!!
[Ivin pauses and takes a breath. He pulls out two cigarettes]
Want one?
DAVID
No thanks. My dad used to smoke a lot, and now even the sight of cigarettes makes me nauseous.
IVIN
[Shrugs]
Suit yourself.
[Discards both cigarettes]
Mr. Consalves, I will not lie to you. The evidence against you is nominal. Only your fingerprints appeared on this phone. Al'Quain gave us your name, and the waiter your description. Now...
[Smiles and laughs at the incredibility]
Maybe you aren't lying, and this is an elaborate set up, but...
[There is a long pause]
...Mr. Consalves, I love this country. As a child, my mother brought me here, from Russia. My father had already abandoned us then, and this was her last chance to make something of herself. She's dead now, Mr. Consalves. But that does not mean I'm done, too. I plan to protect this country, and I'll die knowing that I saved millions with my actions. So...
[IVIN lets out a deep breath]
I won't allow harm to come to my home, be it from you or any other person in this group.
AGENT
[Opens door]
Hurry up and get going, sir. You know how the boss feels about overtime.
IVIN
Fine. Think on what I've said.
[Ivin taunts David with a slice of bread, but he snatches it back and takes a bite before David can grab it. He then leaves it at David's feet.]
Enjoy your evening, Mr. Consalves.
[IVIN exits. Stage fades to darkness.]
[End Of Scene]
Scene Two- Clubs
[DAVID drifts between consciousness and sleep, clearly exhausted. The bread sits at his feet, now old and moldy. It is clear that time has passed. IVIN and the unnamed AGENT observe from a darkened observation room on the other side of the stage.]
DAVID
[Mumbling incoherently to himself]
...why... I... I never... you know... I would've...
[The voice of GEORGE Consalves is heard off stage]
GEORGE
Pitiful. My son, the quitter.
DAVID
[Incredulous]
F- father... ?
GEORGE
You're a disgrace. Just look at you. How could you let the system beat you so easy?
DAVID
[Softly]
Where... where are you?
GEORGE
Hmph. Where the bloody hell do you think I am?
DAVID
...locked away. Just like before. Just like me. You're rotting in a prison cell somewhere.
GEORGE
[Mockingly]
Oh, clever boy. Just clever enough to be an absolute lie!
[GEORGE Consalves enters the room. His hands are tucked into his sides as if bound by a straight jacket. His expression suggests unstability.]
DAVID
[Alarmed]
Why... why are you here!?
GEORGE
[Deranged and angry]
Lies don't work any more, David. Time to own up and face the truth of what happened! Only when you face my reality can you get on with your pitiful existance. Stop lying to me!!
[Georges face becomes calm. He speaks slowly and clearly.]
Where was I locked up?
DAVID
What are you saying-
GEORGE
[Angry]
Where!?
DAVID
[Alarmed and confused]
L- Lucky Hills Mental Institution.
GEORGE
And why was I there?
DAVID
N- no. No more...
GEORGE
Answer me!
DAVID
This isn't happening!!
[GEORGE grabs David's arm, and the prison stage vanishes into darkness. YOUNG DAVID, HELEN Coinsalves, and GEORGE Consalves enter and stand in the darkened stage. Meanwhile, the observation room lights up.]
IVIN
Hm, two days and he's already talking to himself, huh? Interesting...
AGENT
Sir, he's been mumbling on and off to noone in particular about his father.
IVIN
Curious, indeed. Get all the info on his father that you can gather.
AGENT
Sir!!
[The observation room darkens. IVIN and AGENT exit. The prison cell is dimly lit, now. We see YOUNG DAVID, HELEN Consalves, and GEORGE Conssalves around a table. DAVID looks on. Young David tightly clutches a teddy bear, while Helen cowers on the ground. George stands above her with an alcohol bottle in his right hand. He is clearly drunk. Helen has fresh bruises on her face.]
HELEN
[Afraid]
H- honey... p-p-please...
GEORGE
Shut up. It's your fault I'm trapped in this hellhole. You and that stupid kid.
[GEORGE points to YOUNG DAVID, who tenses]
HELEN
[Shocked]
You leave my baby out of this!
[HELEN leaps up and grabs George's right hand. GEORGE smacks her back to the ground with his left.]
GEORGE
[Smugly]
Don't... ah... don't do that.
YOUNG DAVID
Mommy... ?
HELEN
[Urgently]
Stay away, son!
GEORGE
I'm so tired...
[Kicks her in the stomach]
...of your carp.
DAVID
No! Leave mommy alone!
GEORGE
[Turns to the real David, smiling wickedly]
Remember yet?
DAVID
Get over here, you cowardly-
[GEORGE pivots and throws his alcohol bottle at Young David, hitting him in the face. HELEN screams, and GEORGE runs over and kicks his son.]
DAVID
[Terrified]
G- god!!! Why!? Why have you deserted me!?
[The lights fade.]
[End Of Scene]
Scene Three- Hearts
[It is dark. David looks tired, and it is clear that he is malnourished. IVIN and the AGENT sit in the darkened observation room, studying documents.]
DAVID
I don't understand. Why have you desereted me? Tell my why!
[HELEN Consalves walks into the prison cell. She stops and glances directly at David. Then she turns and walks away.]
DAVID
Nice try, but I know you aren't really there. And I know I'm going crazy.
HELEN
[off stage]
Oh, so you think none of this is real?
DAVID
No. No, it's real. But you aren't actually here.
HELEN
Why not? What reason do you offer that proves I can not be here now?
DAVID
Because- because...
HELEN
You know the answer to this, David.
[HELEN walks onto the stage. She watches her son with a tender expression.]
DAVID
You too, huh? Am I doomed to see my dead loved ones again and again?
HELEN
So you acknowledge my death?
DAVID
Of course. I remember it... I...
HELEN
You what, son?
DAVID
I can't... remember it.
HELEN
Yes you can! No more lies! I want to hear the truth from you!
DAVID
Stop it! Not again, please!
HELEN
Speak!
DAVID
About what!?
HELEN
What was the cause of my death?
DAVID
[suddenly meek and fearful]
S- suicide...
HELEN
Think harder. What was the cause of my death?
DAVID
The doctor said-
HELEN
To hell with papers and forensics!
[Rapidly approaches David with a look of determination.]
You know what happened to me.
DAVID
Why would I know anything-
HELEN
[Cutting him off]
Because you were there!
[HELEN grabs David's arm, and the prison cell fades into darkness. The observation room lights up. IVIN and the AGENT study several documents carefully. In the dark cell, HELEN Consalves enters.]
IVIN
[musing to self]
Hm... his father was tried for child abuse. He pled insanity. Shortly after, he was locked away in a mental asylum.
AGENT
Yes, and here, it shows the details of his mother's suicide. Listen to what the motel manager had to say.
[The AGENT begins reading the duocument.]
"I don't think things like this should happen. There was some complaints about room 501, and, when I opened it, there she was. Bottle of poison at her side, wrists slit open. Sad sight. And her kiid. He just stood there, watching the whole thing."
IVIN
You don't say...
[The observation room lights dim, and IVIN exits behind the AGENT. The prison cell lights up, and HELEN sits in a chair holding a suspicious bottle. Her wrists are smeared with a red liquid. YOUNG DAVID enters.]
HELEN
Son...
YOUNG DAVID
Momma! Who did this to you!?
HELEN
[Weakened]
There are... things that you might be too... young... to understand. This is one of them. I just... I need you to know that none of this was your fault.
DAVID
Wha- what is this- why are you-
[HELEN turns to the older David.]
HELEN
You know, deep in your heart, why I said what I said. I couldn't bear to hurt you. But you also know that none of it was true. The guilt which threatened to crush you, the thoughts which plagued your deepest nightmares- you couldn't bear to live like that. So you forgot. You betrayed my memory and hid from the truth- the fact that you drove your father to the edge, and the fact that you are responsible for my death.
[HELEN swallows the contents of the bottle. She gags and claws at her throat. Then, she lets out one cry of anguish before slumpimng down in her chair.]
YOUNG DAVID
Momma? Momma!? Momma!!
[The scene ends with YOUNG DAVID rushing oiver to his dead mother. The real DAVID slumps down, defeated, as the lights fade.]
[End Of Scene]
Scene Four- Diamonds
[IVIN sits alone in the observation room, a look of concern etched onto his face. He is studying one document intently, and he looks tired, as if he's been there a while. In the prison cell, fully lit up and back to the way it was in the beginning, sits DAVID beside a second PRISONER. The new arrival is hunched over and not chained up to his chair.]
IVIN
Ugh... I need to get some sleep. It's now or never.
[Gets up and walks into the prison cell. The observation room dims behind him.]
Well, David... ready to confess to yoiur crime yet.
DAVID
I. Did. Nothing. Please... let me go.
IVIN
I've already told you I can not, David.
DAVID
Fine. So be it.
[There is silence. The other PRISONER slowly raises his head, lookds directly between David and Ivin, and begins to scream.]
PRISONER
I did it! I did everything! Me! Me! Arrest me! Kill me! Skin me alive! Punish me for my sins!!
IVIN
[Ignoring the other prisoner.]
So be it, Mr. Consalves. If you refuse to speak tomorrow, I'll be forced to redirect you to a higher authority. A specialist, in fact.
[IVIN walks away as the prisoner continues screaming.]
PRISONER
Don't leave me here! I can't stand the pain! I killed everyone! They all died because of me! I don't deserve to exist! I never did! Don't let me live on like this!!
DAVID
[Quietly]
Forgive me...
[DAVID finally bites down hard on his own tounge. Blood pours from his mouth.]
PRISONER
Death isn't good enough for us, David! We need to suffer! You and I both know we're headed straight to hell. So be it! Let us burn like we werre destined to from birth! Let our lives end here-
[Both DAVID and the PRISONER suddenly convulse before slumping over in their chairs- dead. The stage fades. The PRISONER exits. IVIN and the AGENT enter.]
IVIN
Suicide, huh? I knew that we should have taken care of everything,. but the boss- well, he's just a cheap guy.
AGENT
Absolutey true.
IVIN
Hm, David. Even in death, you cause problems.
AGENT
So, Ivin, do you think he was lying?
IVIN
No.
AGENT
Should we search for the imposter, then?
IVIN
No.
AGENT
But- I don't understand, sir.
IVIN
In situations like Mr. Consalvase's, the mind tends to... split. One half continues living, and the other accepts all the trauma. I think that David Consalves did meet up with Mr. al'Qain. I think he led a separate life behind his own back.
AGENT
Split personalities? Really?
IVIN
It's conceivable, wouldn't you agree?
AGENT
I suppose. But I guess we'll never really know.
[IVIN and the AGENT exit, leaving DAVID'S body alone. Then, the PRISONER enters and looks at DAVID. The lights fade on him laughing insanely.]
